Yoga with Witold Fitz-Simon

Class Descriptions

Style

I teach an instructional style of yoga based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar. For me a yoga class is an opportunity to learn about the subtle actions of the body as they manifest themselves in the yoga poses (asanas). Through this directed study the body and nervous system can be brought into a state of balance and equanimity and the focused mind can find peace and freedom from the buffeting of everyday mundane existence.

Gym Classes (General Level)

This style is an excellent complement to the fitness environment. In a general level gym class we work with a basic vocabulary of asanas designed to strengthen and open the body. Classes are organized around a particular body part or body action, isolating and developing the necessary anatomical structures. This work is then explored in a sequential progression of asanas that help to strengthen and lengthen the muscles, open the joints and balance the body in general. Though these classes are shorter in length (around 60m), regular attendance will cycle you through all the different muscle groups and body actions of a complete yoga practice. Classes are challenging to your strength, endurance and flexibility.

Level I

In level I classes we explore the fundamentals of technique necessary for all yoga poses. A great place to start for everyone, regardless of level of fitness, these classes follow a methodical progression with limited anatomical and yogic jargon. The longer class allows for a more complete practice, including simple inversions and restorative work along with the more dynamic standing poses.

Level II & Level III

In these classes, the assumption is made that the student has a fundamental understanding of basic body actions and yoga poses. Working at a faster pace, we progress to more difficult poses, introducing the more strenuous inversions, such as Hand Stand and Head Stand and their variations, and more complicated poses such as back bends and arm balances. Though these classes are more challenging they move at a methodical pace designed to maximize the effectiveness of your body in the poses.
